There is a 'Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021' and it prohibits manufacturing, importing, stocking, distributing, selling, and using plastic carry bags with a thickness less than 75 microns with effect from September 30, 2021. From December 31 this will go up to 120 microns.
Jagdish Bhatia, a resident of Delhi has set up a 'No Plastic' shop, a website for eco-friendly products, primarily focusing on cotton bags for wholesale and retail. With the on set of the pandemic and the uptick of the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021there has been a spike in the sales and more growth is expected. Other players of cotton and jute manufacturing are gearing up as well.
The Indian Jute Mills Association has made presentations to the ministry of textiles and ministry of consumer affairs and has proposed a 'Bring Your Own Bag' campaign pan India to the government. It is similar to what global retailers like Tesco have been doing for some years.
Earbuds, sticks for balloons, flags, candy sticks, ice cream sticks, polystyrene (thermocol) for decoration, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straws, trays, wrapping films, invitation cards, cigarette packets, PVC banners less than 100 microns- have been banned from July 1.
The demand for plastic substitutes is still at a nascent stage in India whereas the world has been moving fast to beat plastic pollution for a few years now. Paper is the next best alternative considered due to price reasons. Other substitutes like glass, jute and cotton are costlier than paper hence, paper is preferred to those.
