I2U2 stands for Israel, India, the UAE and the US and was referred to as the West Asian Quad by Ahmed Albanna, the UAE ambassador to India. The Prime Minister has participated in a virtual summit with the heads of state of Israel (PM Yair Lapid), the UAE (President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan) and the US (President Joe Biden). The summit has taken place on the 14th of July.
In October 2021, a meeting of the four foreign ministers has taken place when External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar was visiting Israel and at that time the grouping was called 'International Forum for Economic Cooperation'. Its stated aim is to discuss "common areas of mutual interest, to strengthen the economic partnership in trade and investment in our respective regions and beyond". A few areas that have been identified and discussed further were water, energy, transportation, space, health and food security.
The Abraham Accords of 2020 has made way for diplomatic ties between Israel and the Middle East. It marks an important shift in stance of West Asian countries on Israel. President Biden's on-going visit to the Middle East will be focused on Israel's increasing integration in the region and the formation of I2U2. Prime Minister's Modi has made a short visit to the UAE after being present at the G7 summit two weeks ago. This points towards India's growing engagement with countries in West Asia and Israel.
This grouping helped India reap benefits with the UAE announcing $2 billion investment to develop food parks in the country and the group also committed into investing in a 300 Mw hybrid (wind and solar) renewable energy project in Gujarat.
