Ukraine and the EU

The European Commission has formally granted candidate status to Ukraine after it has appealed to be a member state of the European Union first in February. The EU president Ursula von der Leyen has said, "We all know that the Ukrainians are ready to die for the European perspective". "We want to let them live with us the European dream". It felt indecorous, saying something so crass, when people are actually being killed everyday.

Joining the EU has three stages. In the first stage, the country is given a candidate membership. In the second stage, negotiations regarding adoption of the EU law and other reforms takes place (It is called the ascension criteria). In the final step, the country can join the EU when it has met all the requirements.

Even though Ukraine was granted a member status, it is gonna take years to complete the rest of the process and officially become a member of the EU. Croatia, which has joined the EU in 2013, has taken ten whole years to officially become a member.
