The race for a new president

The leading party, the BJP, has announced its candidate for the upcoming presidential election Ms Droupadi Murmu, a tribal leader from Odisha. The candidate announced by the opposition is Mr Yashwant Sinha, who served as the Finance Minister during the Chandra Sekhar(1990-1991) and Atal Bihari Vajpayee(1998-2002) governments.

Droupadi Murmu (68) was an ex-governor of the state of Jharkhand, and is from a scheduled tribe from Odisha. She has once served as a teacher in a school and has made her way through politics. She has served in various ministerial posts before she has served a full five year term as the governor of the state of Jharkhand. She'd be the first tribal woman to be appointed as the President of India. It is a huge win for the scheduled communities and women of this country.

Mr Yashwant Sinha (84) was an ex-finance minister who has served during some very important time periods in the history of our country notably during the time when the LPG reforms were brought to India. Having such experience can be calculated as a win for India which could mean better leadership.

How is the President elected?

- The elected members of both houses of the parliament and the elected members of the legislative assemblies of all the states of India, including the capital and the union territory of Puducherry elect the president of India. 50 MP's are mandatorily expected to select the president and 50 others are expected to agree.

The President of India serves for a term of five years. The main duty of the President of India is to defend the constitution of India. The President is in charge of appointing the Chief Justice of India and other judges on the advice of the CJI. The President is the Commander-In-Chief during times of war.

I wonder who will be a better representative of our country during talks with foreign countries as it is one of the main roles as a president. I see a tight race and hope for the best representative to win.
